One of the many things that has been said to me is that I will be taken aback by the prices in the
shops. Not so. Certainly, since the introduction of televisions we are able to retain a finer grasp of
shops. Not so. Certainly, since the introduction of televisions we are able to retain a finer grasp of
some of these changing elements in life.
That said, I still resent forking out the best part of two quid for a simple cup of coffee. It is quite irrational, I know, but it annoys me beyond reason. That people willingly pay £50 for a mobile phone is but a mere curiosity to me, as is the £50 pair of jeans. But the price of a cuppa...
And I know why. It is because I cannot help but compare it to the price and place of coffee in the prison world. I buy coffee, poor stuff, at a quid a bag. Three bags lasts me two whole weeks, and I drink ferocious quantities of the stuff out of my awful plastic jug.
Outside, then, it hurts to cough up a similar amount just for one single cup of coffee. I doubt I will ever get used to it.
If you think you can get a mobile phone for £50 you're not quite as up to date with the outside world as you think, mate!
ReplyDeleteQuite amazing to note the change in posts and tone.
ReplyDeleteThe sole purpose of your existence previously seems to have been dealing with the enemy of HMPS. However you have quickly and successfully adapted into dealing with the day to day issues that confronts everyone, the cost of things, who should pay for what and how, transportation, engagement in society at large.
Keep it up, there's hope for you yet...
you can get a mobile phone for £15 in Tesco, depends what you want...
ReplyDeleteThe rest of us Ben have to cut our costs accordingly. My phone was £10, pay as you go, in Tesco, but you can get an iphone for somthing like £350+ and expensive monthly contract. You can get a pair of jeans in tesco for £3,(they are crap tho) or a nice pair of levi's for £50+. If i am skint, i can buy a pack of lentils for about a quid, and make 10 good meals from that. If i am not skint, my weekly shop can cost a fortune. I try and be as savvy as i can with cash, moneysavingexpert.com is great, and when you discover ebay, you can get good things new, or second hand at great discount.
ReplyDeleteI think Ben's latest blogs have brought home to some of us just how much we take everything for granted - like travelling, mobile phones and social interactions. Ben has a lot to learn but is it any wonder? Keep going Ben, keep writing and letting us know all the things you find difficult, unusual or unbelievable - we will get good and interesting knowledge from you. Still hoping that you make it out soon and life treats you fairly out here.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck.
