Crime, Punishment and Irony

Mayday!

Travelling back from London today my laptop case, including laptop and papers, was stolen off the train. This leaves me in a very bad position, as I was in the middle of projects leading to good employment.

The irony of my becoming a victim of crime is something I will deal with tomorrow! In the meantime, if anyone has a laptop they can spare to get to me ASAP, could you please contact me through the blog email - bengunn12612@googlemail.com. I will repay you from my  first cheque, due in about six weeks.

And yes, I am livid!

  1. What a shock - I wonder how many of your ex colleagues (prisoners) inside the prison would have done that to you?

Really sorry to read this and that I cannot help with a laptop - hopefully someone will be able to help soon.

    Keep strong.

  2. @ Mary-I hardly think the term 'colleague' is appropriate for someone of Ben's character! Perhaps the term 'scumbag' would certainly be more apt in your description of those responsible. No honour among thieves as the saying goes. What irony there is in this tale-perhaps the BTP had a good laugh at his misfortune I know I/we would have.

    1. You're obviously an employee of the prison service then. You gave it away with the 'perhaps the BTP had a good laugh at his misfortune I know I/we would have'. Your not someone who has an ounce of humanity is my guess.

You really instill confidence in the CJS. Thanks for the reassurance that prisoners will return to society reformed.

Another slack jawed troglodyte joins the debate. Well done, you are a credit to your profession/species.

  4. Danke/gracias/merci/efharisto! Your comments leave me weak with laughter. Some of you on here need to realise some scumbags cannot be rehabilitated at all. Unfortunately for society they are simply a burden upon us all. I'll not waste any more of my valuable time on here.

    1. Your pointless and ignorant reply sounds very familiar. It is almost identical to a sound bite that appeared on the blog a few weeks ago. Strange that!

I would agree that some 'scumbags' as you so eloquently put it cannot be rehabilitated at all, (we're talking way less than 5% of the prison population).

The problem is that you are directing your comments on a blog to someone that has committed a very serious crime and has always accepted the responsibility for committing it; has spent 32yrs in prison, (22yrs over tariff), and has lots of interest for employment.

What Ben has over you is the experience of prison in rhetoric and reality, (you are probably fairly new on 20k a year or are fairly old, cynical and just coming up to retirement), he also has the advantage of intellect and qualifications. Much more than you, I suspect, (apart from being able to say thank you in various different languages). Well done there!

Once again, I thank you for entering the debate on penal policy. You're input is invaluable, (oh sorry, you didn't enter into this debate did you as you are so blinkered)

Wet your pants laughing about 'scumbags', (the ones that the prison service does not have the capability to reform & you don't give a crap about ), because they cost tax payers more money. The prison service gets them in, does nothing with the majority and chucks them out. No wonder a good majority re-offend. Revolving door eh? and you contribute to this.

Where should I send my bill for the penal system that is not doing it's job?? To you directly?

So easy to throw the halve after the hatchet. But if what you say is true, then why do we as a society waist 'valuable' public money on the wages of useless public servants, whose 'job' it is to rehabilitate?

Two 'scumbags' don't make a right.

  8. Strange, these interlopers only appeared since I joined, was banned from, the screws blog. I think they are sending their best and brightest to poke at me here, yet they hide behind a cowardly anonymity and soon scuttle away. A credit to their profession.

  9. Ha ha - knuckle draggers! At least Ben has got a decent job...

  10. I quite like having them around. Their level of "debate" serves as a constant vindication for everything on this blog.

  11. Rather than berating people who have these views surely it is better to link them to a series of Ben's posts (the ones linked to at the top for background and a few others) to encourage them to read and learn.

Remember, ignorance is a vital step on the path to education.

  12. @ Pete's various arrogant contributions,I hope that you don't ever need the help & assistance of my colleagues during the course of your normal day.Your views are somewhat disturbing & distorted & I'll continue to help the general public during the course of my working day & if that means robust policing-so be it!

    1. "Robust policing"? Oh dear Lor... :/

  13. @Anon. I don't see Pete's comments as being arrogant in any way. You intruded here to denigrate any efforts I may make to become a productive member of society, and mock my recent theft. As you are apparently a copper of some description I find this truly bizarre. To call anyone else's views "disturbing and distorted" is a bit rich, don't you think? Given that your attitude must make anyone who reads your comments doubt the quality and intentions of any copper they bump into.

As for "robust policing"....try "effective policing" instead. All you have done is drag yourself and your peers into ridicule. Please come back often!

  14. @ Ben-there was obviously a reason why you were required to serve 22 years over your tariff. I believe I know why-you also know too! END

    1. Ben has published the reasons for being so far over tariff (both those that make him look good, and the various ones that don't) here on numerous occasions. You, along with anyone else who has ever hinted in these comments that they know something more about Ben than the rest of us, seem to be operating under the mistaken view that he hides the skeletons in his cupboard from his readers. He doesn't. We support him fully whilst knowing about the dark stuff, and when you post these little pettinesses all you really show is that you haven't bothered to read much of this blog.

If you can't be bothered to inform yourself fully before pontificating on this subject, why should we pay attention to anything you say?

    2. OK anonymous. Please provide EVIDENCE to back up your belief. Please, I'm keen to learn.

Of course. If you cannot back up your claim then it is pointless!! So why make it in the first place?

  15. @Anon (and that itself speaks volumes...)the reasons I served so long are a lengthy story of politics, stupidity and maliciousness. One constant theme is that when staff like you appeared at my door, I wouldn't take the crap you dished out in silence. If all you have is sly innuendo, perhaps "END" is your best option. Bye! :)

  17. There are some narrow mined individuals around I must say. Why does it give you a 'kick' laughing at other peoples mis-fortune? You certainly do sound like a cop or a screw, and asfar as I am concerned they ought to be the ones locked up and throw away the key. @ssholes :). Chris B

    1. Yep, I agree with you annonymous 12.32, just look at the police's behaviour at Hillsborough in 1989 as an example of how deadly incompetant they are. For the sake of our health and safety, the police should be disbanded.

    2. Sorry, its Chris B, anyway, I do agree with you Chris

  18. Can I please say that not all police and I expect not all prison wardens are bad and it is a shame bad apples show up on here bringing the whole of their profession down.

    1. I tend to think the problem is with the system that crushes the good out of most of the people that join rather than the individuals themselves. I've always felt that any prison officers able to maintain their humanity in that background must be practically angels!

    2. Wigarse,

I deal with people that have joined or wish to join, 'the thin blue line' on a daily basis. Two thirds of them probably never had or will have an ounce of humanity in the first place and I'm talking 18-50 year olds here. I wouldn't say the system crushes/crushed anything out of them. Rather, it reinforced their lack of understanding with gusto.

The one third that have got a shred of integrity when they join do not tend to last long because of the square peg/ round hole situation.

In other words; a*******s = good; effective people = bad.

  19. There is no better vocation for any man or woman keen to exercise their spitefulness.

Others that join the Prison Service in the mistaken belief that they as an individual ‘can make a difference’, soon realize,(in the cold light of job security)that they *are* prepared to turn a blind eye (and deaf ear) to the abuses that occur (in *every* prison) on a daily basis,

It seems to be a case of: If you can’t beat them – beat them!

  21. 1, One purpose of trolling on the Internet is to drive all comment and conversation towards that of the troll's comment. When it's clearly a basic and inflammatory comment can I suggest it's best ignored?

    2. If you think there are malicious followers Ben, I'd be careful regards borrowing a laptop. Call me paranoid, but could be easy way to drop someone ( you ) in it...
