The Mouse, my Lodger

The mouse seems to have made itself at home though I’m damned if I can find its nesting place. It is also taking to explore further afield than my little bin, now reaching as far as my shelves. This involves climbing either sheer wood or sheer wall, either one deserving of a nibble at the biscuits I hide up there.
Only once have I seen him. Quiet or absent during the day, within minutes of my light going off at night he is out and about, usually making a racket by trying to lever empty packets out of my bin to under my bed. Once he reached the shelves I just had to check. Leaping for the light switch I caught matey red handed and beady eyed before he leapt behind the telly. A few minutes passed and he stood up and peered around. Such a pretty looking mouse, so I haven't the heart to kick him out into the harsh world. As long as he doesn't start nibbling my toes as I sleep, we should enter a period of peaceful coexistence.

  1. Its nice to hear that you not willing to kick him out it shows a softer side. Has there been many mice in your cells over the years?

  2. The breeding season's about to start. With a nice warm wing to live in and all the biscuits they can eat you soon won't be able to move without treading on one!

  3. You leave the little mouse alone. That's nothing, Holloway have the biggest rats ever. I was once or twice asked to get a spider out of a cell, as they don't bother me. (never killed them, just put them outside). It always amused me how some of these rough old inmates, who had done some horrid crimes, would be scared by a little spider..... but they were. By the way, you can get humane traps for mice.

  4. Well, Ben! I am not going to remind you of any mouse stories, or movies, as they all end up in "Weirdsville"! Remember Ben, "All in moderation", so not too many biscuits, as fat mice become stupid!

  5. A Little Light Entertainment, from October 2009 has you chasing a mouse around your cell naked. Not the first time then!

  8. In Winchester Prison I used to have one. I would see it's shadow on the wall, via the security lights, as it scuttled along the horizontal bars. It had a liking for my chocolate digestives, and would also climb into the waste paper basket.

Out here they live under the floorboards, and when they squeak or make a noise gnawing away Rocky goes mad trying to get them. They even nibble his dog biscuits on the side in the kitchen. Two years in a row I have caught 7 in mousetraps. There is a strong smell of them in the cupboard under the stairs. Hopefully the workmen who are replastering the diningroom and fitting doubleglazing will fix the holes to keep them out of the kitchen.

  9. Not having heard any sign of the mouse for a week now I am assuming that he has departed for the great outdoors to enjoy the Spring. Ben.
